Not So Obvious

John 16:12-13 English Standard Version (ESV)

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

What was true of Jesus disciples then is true for us now. There are things we are not ready to hear. The Holy Spirit will only reveal that which He is told to speak to us. He responds to the will of God and not our demands.

So this comes down to what the Father holds more important, intellect or relationship. He lost Adam and Eve to the argument for intellect. Since He loves us and has redeemed us, I choose to believe God will place relationship before intellect.

The bible repeats itself often about God’s desire for us to seek Him, relationship before intellect. So much of what we do in searching the scriptures seems to be gaining knowledge about God, His ways and His will. Do we seek intellect in doing that or do we put relationship first?

This is a warning which began in the garden with the serpent. God is withholding information from us. The only way to stop Satan from filling our minds with these intellectual distractions is to make sure we are putting relationship before intellect.

Great men have studied the Word their whole life and have volumes of works that could take decades to read and comprehend. It is easy to get caught up in the appreciation of those works. Those works came into existence because the authors placed relationship before intellect. The way I know this is in the truths that are revealed there that could only have come via the Holy Spirit.

Obvious

Psalm 19:1-2 English Standard Version (ESV)

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.

A young man declares, “Since it is so obvious then I don’t need to tell people about God.”

Yes it is so obvious that man saw God in the fire and declared He was a fire God and gave Him a name.

Then they saw Him in the wind and said He was the God of the wind and gave Him another name.

Then they saw Him in the water and the same thing happened.

My question is a little more direct to the point young man. “Did you come to this conclusion on your own or did you only give thought to that possibility after reading Psalm 19?”

Man left without a guide will draw his own conclusions. In this I must confess, if the bible does not specifically reveal a truth, I get curious about the possibilities.

In the Garden God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day, every day. They had God to observe and we know nothing about what was said. The only question to arise out of that time was posed by a liar who presented the possibility of a truth.

“God is not telling you everything.”

“He said do not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil because he is hiding something from you.”

“There are things God does not want you to know. God keeps secrets.”

When did intellect replace relationship?

Here we are after the Cross of Christ in the church age. We have His Word and His Word is true and yet without perfect understanding, without great intellect, we have questions that we want answered.

John 14:26 English Standard Version (ESV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Will the Holy Spirit teach us all things?
