The Answer

John 6:63 English Standard Version (ESV) It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

This is the answer. What was the question?

What did I inherit?

The question came about because of the use of the word covenant to define the word testament. If they are in fact equal, how does that define either? As always I went to my bible software to find definitions that explain the meaning of both.

Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words said; For Testament see Covenant. So they are equal.

Covenant (Noun and Verb):

primarily signifies “a disposition of property by will or otherwise.” In its use in the Sept., it is the rendering of a Hebrew word meaning a “covenant” or agreement (from a verb signifying “to cut or divide,” in allusion to a sacrificial custom in connection with “covenant-making,” ref. Vine’s

Naturally this led to another question on my part. Have we been cut out of the will or are we inheritors? Since I can see by His last will and testament that I am in fact an inheritor, what did I inherit?

His answer came back to me; “I gave you my Word!”

If we look at the life of the man Jesus we discovered He owned no house, no animals, no property, yet upon His death and resurrection became the inheritor of all things. When we look at that with the eyes of flesh then being left with a bible seems insignificant compared to all He possesses now.

He also said that if He went He would send His Spirit to guide us in all the things He said. If the God of the universe gives of Himself to keep His Word, then His Word must be very important.

That is why John 6:63 is the answer to the question.

His Response

Hebrews 10:29 English Standard Version (ESV) How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

A disobedient servant is one that cannot be trusted. The first response to continued willful sin is a breakdown in relationship which we caused. Saved or not sin still has consequences which we cannot escape. We can be assured of eternal salvation because we placed out faith in Christ but that does not mean that we can be unfaithful and escape any consequences for our willful sin.

2 Corinthians 5:10 English Standard Version (ESV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Make no mistake here, this judgment falls upon those who are saved from going to hell for they are part of the bride of Christ, the true church.

Ezekiel 16:63 English Standard Version (ESV) that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

An unfaithful servant will no longer be allowed to speak for God. His witness is tainted with sin.

God is consistent in His response to sin. Yes He is faithful to forgive a repentant sinner who confesses his sins from the heart. God owes nothing to the sinner who only confesses in his mind to escape the consequences of his actions.

Hebrews 6:5-6 English Standard Version

and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Continual willful sin has dire consequences.
