John 8:31-36 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The purpose of truth is to set you free from the power of sin. Sin enslave those who have not received Jesus Christ into their hearts and received the Spirit of Truth. If we fail to realize the purpose of truth, we will seek truth as an advantage over others.
Human survival has taught us to take advantage of others. Knowledge has always been a tool of commanders in the field. Knowledge gives corporate killers an advantage in the stock market. Truth is rooted deep in blackmail. That is another type of truth. That is not our true Lord.
In verse 31 above “if you continue in my word” is at the forefront of all the issues related to truth, freedom and the power over sin. To quote a truth from a science fiction movie from the past, “Your brain leaks.” Our brains are flesh and subject to decay. As with all things related to the use of this mortal coil, use it or lose it.
Yes the implication here is to read the Word of God and to read it daily. Absolutely but the greater issue is “continue in” is speaking about abiding.
John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
