Tasty

1 Peter 2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

I love sourdough bread. To me it tastes better than any other bread. It is made with a special kind of yeast. Not all bread yeasts are alike. There are specialty yeasts for particular breads. I detest rye, others love it. I care not for pumpernickel while other adore it. I like warm brown bread and I find myself in the minority on that taste.

So it is with sin. Some go so far as to say what they do is not a sin and refuse to acknowledge the hidden dangers of infection. Some trivialize certain sins; “It is not a sin unto death.” Even within believers who have been saved from sin, the memory of how good it “tasted” lingers. Such is the appeal and power of sin to cause those who have been set free to long for the “garlick of Egypt”. (Numbers 11:5)

Hebrews 6:4-5 for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come

Nothing tastes better.

Empty

Deuteronomy 16:16 Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty:

Continuing on with the issues of yeast; have you ever cut into a loaf of bread only to find a gaping cavity where the yeast has cause an area void of bread? It is not seen from the outside but there is any emptiness inside. Sin creates an emptiness within us. Many of us who have come to Christ felt that emptiness and longed for something of substance to fill the void. God did that.

Exodus 35:31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;

That nature of sin can work itself in a Christian if sin isn’t dealt with in our lives. It is one of the forms of chastening, one that indicates we have gone too long without repentance and confession. That emptiness does not appear suddenly like a bloating, but rises slowly like yeast. Lacking any outward signs, a thorough inner examination is warranted.

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
