Safe Haven

Deuteronomy 4:41-43 Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising; That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live: Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

Bezer = gold ore or remote fortress

Ramoth = heights, sublime, difficult to attain to

Golan = their captivity; their rejoicing

How significant is the number three in what Moses has done to provide a safe haven for those who are guilty of the blood of man, but yet innocent? Then meaning of the number three is significant and has baffled biblical scholars for years as the its depths. If you will allow me, I would like to take us all the way back to the initial importance and try to make a connection between our origins and our present condition.

Three first and foremost is significant in things that are real, solid and have form. They consist of height, width and depth. Our first present correlation should be seen in this three dimensional reference.

Ephesians 3:17-19

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Moses so long ago cut out a safe haven to point to the coming Christ. If the number three in itself is not enough to point the way, taken into consideration the meaning of the three places.

Bezer is gold ore, that which has not gone thru the refiner’s fire, the purification process. Malachi 3:2 speaking to the coming Christ.

Ramoth is His Holy Hill, difficult to attain to great eights. Read Psalm 24.

Golan speaking to having been taken captive. Read Psalm 68:18.

Not to mention, but I must, Psalm 9:9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

And the scoffers say that Jesus Christ isn’t in the Old Testament, let them be silenced.

Turning Point

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

When I first came to the Lord there was much in me that needed correction. There still is error in me that can do better. Somewhere in this life we live in Christ there has to be a turning point where it stops being all about me.

This verse was easy to accept in John’s ministry because John was the forerunner spirit, John made a way for the coming of the Lord. John’s ministry had to stop to allow the focus to be on Jesus’ ministry.

In these days our ministry is Christ in us. For His ministry to continue, we cannot withdraw. We are the chosen vessels of His ministry and it is not as simple and clear as it was for John to decrease.

One of the most difficult things for me to recognize was that turning point where those things that have been corrected in me where no longer weaknesses but strengths. That point is reached when grace is no longer just a thing received but given.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

We do not see that as long as all we see is our need for correction. Correction is needed but it should never be a thing used as an excuse to withhold pouring out grace upon others. Correction is God’s way of setting us free from the bonds of sin that keep grace from flowing out.

Look to Luke 6:38 again. You cannot withhold grace that is overflowing. It is beyond your control to contain. Let it flow thru you, you are not the source, just the vessel.
