Dominion

Daniel 7:13-14 English Standard Version

The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

In keeping with yesterday’s post on False Doctrine we should look at the religious leaders in the days of Jesus. There had been no prophets from God in Israel for 490 years. Doctrine was the purview of priests and scribes. Their control over the people was absolute as far as religion was concerned.

Then John the baptist comes preaching repentance. He was not a threat to the religious leaders even if they disagreed with what he had to say. But then comes this self-appointed rabbi from a meaningless town called Nazareth and the people were listening to his teachings and gathering by the thousands.

This was a man who threatened their dominion. It was when He began referring to Himself as the Son of Man that they stood against Him.

Matthew 26:64-65 English Standard Version

64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.”

While I am sure that the religious leaders of the day knew about Daniel’s prophecy, I doubt very seriously that they taught this doctrine to the people to give them hope beyond what they offered. They held sway over Israel for 490 years and were not about to allow this Nazarene to replace them.

Failure to take into consideration the whole counsel of God is error by omission and can be considered false doctrine.

Acts 20:27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

Paul was right in addressing this advice to the Ephesians elders. It is advice that is good for all seasons.
