Jeremiah 18:16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.
There is within a number of believers a false understanding according to the sovereignty of God. It is their failed understanding that God causes failure and shame. They see verses like these and accuse God of sending Satan. The hissing is the sound and sign of the presence of the serpent. He is there but the Lord did not send him.
Preceding this verse is one in which God declared what happens to those who will not leave evil doings. They do not heed the word of the Lord, they do not abide in His love and mercy. They abandoned God and according to God’s covenant of blessings, His blessing is withheld from rebellion.
We all have seen what happens to houses and communities where houses are abandoned. Evil moves in and those who pass by see the decay and decline of houses and neighborhoods. So it is with those who have rebelled against God, the serpent moves in, but that is not the fault of the house.
The issue of the hissing is a constant persistent presence that will not stay in one house and seeks to bring down a neighborhood, then a city, and hissing if not destroyed will cause others to abandon the houses they have work hard to build.
Numbers 14:11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
To all that have eyes to see and ears to hear: hisss!
