Third Step

Ephesians 2:4-10 English Standard Version

But[And] God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

This a too much for anyone to take in all at once. We should point out one aspect found here to focus our attention on, faith.

Grace through faith is found because of where we have placed our faith. That is discovered in verse 7, “in Christ Jesus”. We can come back to the meatier parts of Ephesians 2 once we have discovered how we can put our faith in Christ. This is the key feature of grace. Grace is given not because of what we have done but because of what Christ has done.

So much focus has been put on what we must do to be saved that it obscures the truth. Jesus already did everything required for our salvation. All we have to do is believe and trust in Him.

Acts 16:30-31 English Standard Version (ESV) Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Key here in this simple act is a change of titles. Paul speaks to Jesus as Lord, not Christ nor Messiah, but as Lord.
