Revelation 3:15-16 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
I have heard teachings on these verses which I believe are flawed in the area of warning. Some preach hot and cold is related to evangelism and that might well be true. If the message is evangelism, then yes it should apply. Another aspect might well be in caring for the needy, neglected, and indigent populations.
What I disagree with is the issue of loss of salvation that often is used as a threat if you do not repent and change your ways. He says, “I will spue thee out of my mouth.” I take that to mean, that God will no longer use you as His voice in this world. That should be a warning in and of itself, but is not a treat of loss of salvation.
John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
We are held by hand not mouth. Don’t allow anyone to threaten you with loss of salvation because you are not doing what they want you to do. We serve God, not man. The essence of serving God is a love response.
1 Timothy 1:5 (ESV) The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
A good conscience doesn’t need to be guilted into anything.
