The Way of Truth

John 14:1-7 English Standard Version

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

1“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

We often focus on the place being prepared for us in terms of eternal life but this eternal life starts the moment we are born again into the Kingdom of God. This place prepared for us is a new heart where Christ abides in us.

Ezekiel 36:26 English Standard Version (ESV) And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Galatians 2:20 English Standard Version (ESV) I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Christ is the Life. The life we have is because we have accepted Christ into our hearts. The eternal life has already begun and it is not over, we are still living in Christ and He lives in us. As for the Way, He made it possible by going to the cross and sacrificing His life for ours. Our way to this life is through faith in that sacrifice, His resurrection and His ascension.

Truth

Revelation 3:14, 17 English Standard Version

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

Recent conversations with a Muslim acquaintance in Indonesia has been about truth. He gives me poor examples and then quotes dictionaries. As I ponder how to answer him fairly and without rancor, the Lord brought me these verses today.

We cannot rely on opinion nor worldly wisdom to discover truth.

We have to rely on the Words of the Amen, who was with God in the beginning, by whom the whole world was created.

John 1:1-5 English Standard Version

The Word Became Flesh

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The gospel of John identifies Jesus Christ as the Word, He is the true witness.

In Revelation 3:17 we see two parts which distinguishes our ability to see and accept truth.

The first part is man’s acceptance of his condition. The second part is being exposed to what is true by the true witness. Apart from the true witness there can be no understanding of truth.

Dictionaries will change to reflect usage, they only speak to how man uses word to communicate with one another. Those definitions change as man abuses the language they were given and redefine their understandings by agreement via popular usage.

Jesus Christ declare He is Truth. Believing on Him is believing the truth.
