Mark 1:6 And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
Imagine if you would that you are a merchant in a caravan transporting your goods to Jerusalem and you encounter this nut job in the desert. Time is money and you don’t have time to stop and put your goods at risk. You do have a tale to tell to anyone who might listen about what you saw and could not understand. Romans 12:2a And be not conformed to this world:

Isaiah 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Something besides appearance drew them to Christ.
